UNION’S OFFICIAL HOMECOMING PARTY

The Brothers of the Pi Pi Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity invite you to ALPHAdemics!

In this event we will be informing you of academic opportunities on campus, and things to do in the local area in hopes of acclimating U to Union College. In addition our student panel will be sharing their experiences, and willing to answer any questions you may have.

This article outlines the paradox that has been highlighted during President Obama’s presidency: how a white President can speak more openly about race than a Black President; in addition, to supplementing a narrative of the manifestations of racism towards black integration and the black response.

The irony of President Barack Obama is best captured in his comments on the death of Trayvon Martin, and the ensuing fray. Obama has pitched his presidency as a monument to moderation. He peppers his speeches with nods to ideas originally held by conservatives. He routinely cites Ronald Reagan. He effusively praises the enduring wisdom of the American people, and believes that the height of insight lies in the town square. Despite his sloganeering for change and progress, Obama is a conservative revolutionary, and nowhere is his conservative character revealed more than in the very sphere where he holds singular gravity—race.

As President, I will actively seek ways in which our class can collectively transcend the limits constructed around us by serving as your representing voice and liaison. I vow to readily broadcast both grievances and needed initiatives—whether in regards to increased sustainability, equality, opportunity, or otherwise—so that we may improve inter-communal relationships and overall quality of college life. Congratulations to Bro. Alvaro Peters!

Thanks to the Class of 1973 Community Service Internship endowed fund, the Roger H. Hull Summer Community Service Internship endowed fund, and individual alumni and parents, our chapter brother, Alvaro Peters, along with 8 other students were the recipients of funding for their work with a  non-profit organization during the upcoming summer months. According to the selection committee “with limited funding and the largest and strongest applicant pool yet, this year’s selection process was particularly competitive.”

This summer, Alvaro will be teaching and mentoring students through the Breakthrough Collaborative program. The program’s goals are: to increase academic opportunity for underserved, high-potential youth by placing them on the path of a successful college career and inspiring high school students to become educators. Alvaro references, “I find it imperative to provide such deserving yet underprivileged youth with an above average education, as they often fall victim to a lack of resources and fulfilling educational experience of which they consequently suffer a great deal.”

Hello everyone,

My name is Joseph Mason and I am currently a junior. I am from Chicago Illinois, majoring in sociology with a minor in political science. I am involved in a number of clubs and activities on campus. I am the social chair of Black Student Union, in which I help recruit new members and create fliers for upcoming events. I am the captain of the men’s basketball team, a member of Black Law Student Association, and a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated.

The reason why I am running for VP of multicultural affairs is that I believe that multicultural groups on campus need to be strengthened. I feel that there is not enough unity among these groups, and as VP of multicultural affairs I want to bring these different clubs together. There should not be competition between these different clubs, but unity and an attempt to achieve a common goal. I feel that this position needs someone that has leadership capabilities. What I plan to do if elected is strengthen the Leadership In Diversity committee (LID) and push for more multicultural unity. LID is something that could really allow students from different backgrounds to become more involved in multicultural activities and is a chance for them to voice their opinions on what needs to be done around campus. I also want to try and plan one big event with all multicultural clubs in which we can all experience the different clubs on campus.
